The 1940s Stole My Heart

Ever think you were born in the wrong time period?  The colors of fashion this Fall are so entirely vintage American, I just could not be happier. True mustard yellow, deep burnt oranges, mulberry meets plum, navy blues that lean towards royal, army greens... I want it all.

Mash that up with tweeds, cable knits, denim and some fabulous structured silhouettes with a waistline that really destroy any overindulgent 80's-esque costume nonsense trying to vie its way into our hearts at the local mall.

Hair and makeup get a rejuvinating kick too with soft romantic silhouettes, curls abundant. Makeup looks that enhance all feminine features, rather than suggest ambiguity, are reminding us that we may chose suggestive eyes and kissable lips over blatant outcries for attention.

Oh, 1940s, let's return to this nostalgic moment. Throw some Count Basie into your record player and pull out The Andrews Sisters Christmas album because real-home, "down earth" melodies and elegant style is back. It is that authenticity that we all crave and it's just perfectly in time for the holidays.

Things My Mother Never Told Me: Makeup

As woman, we have all had that Ah-HA moment when we learned something about image that our mother failed to teach us as young ladies...and so begins the series "Things My Mother Never Told Me."

1. Makeup: Cream on Cream, Powder on Powder.

Somewhere between concealer, foundation and setting powder, the order of everything else was completely left out. And, if you are anything like me, you improvised. WRONG.

Anything creamy or liquid should go on before dry, powdery products. This means, eye liners (creamy) before shadow (powder). Common sense- the shadow SETS the liner and keeps it from traveling. THEN, if need be, go back and add an accent or two atop your shadow. But, take it from my trial and error, it is annoying when liquid liner goes skidding across already powdered skin.

2. Makeup: Curl Lashes BEFORE Mascara

Honestly, you are just wasting mascara and giving yourself more cleanup to do if you apply before curling. Avoiding curling altogether by priming the lashed instead.

3. Makeup: Primer, What is It?

It is what it sounds like. It's just like balancing and prepping your walls for a new paint job. Skin Primer goes on after your moisturizer and before your foundation to even out skin discoloration and make your makeup last hours and hours longer without constantly touching it up. A 20th century gift to woman.

Lash Primer goes on before mascara and works wonders to protect and plump lashes. Also, prevents mascara from getting crispy on your tender lids.

4. Makeup: HOW to Look Bronzed Without Bronzer

It's ok to use two shades of foundation for dimension, rather than bronzing your cheeks to death with powder. Foundation glows from the inside out and looks much more natural and subtle.

5. Makeup: Camera Nightmare

Foundations with SPF of 20 or higher can create glare ("shine") when reflecting light of a camera. Stick to SPF 15 or lower in your daily lotions and foundations. Better yet, steer yourself in the direction of foundations MADE  to be used under lights.

Andrea's Top Picks: Foundation and Mascara

  • Foundation Lancome Photogenic, Arbonne Liquid, HD Makeup Forever...these feel so breathable and balance tone in photos
  • Mineral Powder: Arbonne ...your skin will be glowing.
  • Setting Powder: MakeupForever HD Microfinish Setting Powder...softens overall makeup without in any way altering the colors.\
  • Primer: Makeup Forever has everything from clear to tinted primer for controlling color imbalances in skin's tones...balances skin tones, makeup lasts for the entire day.
  • Mascara: Lancome Primer and classic Definicils Mascara. Naturally defined lashes... I try to cheat on Definicils, but find myself going back again and again, dissatisfied with so-called competitors.

Shoe Essentials Fall/Winter 2011

.Shoes. Cant's live with out them. Really, truly a personal favorite. Keep your eyes peeled for these Fall/Winter Essentials:

Riding Boots. Preferably in cognac or some grey tone. Mmm, so wonderful and comfy.

Oxfords: cute, gender bending. Buy them in leather, canvas, or suede...just get a pair. Any color, nuetral or bright will do. For shorter legs, I suggest buying a pair with a built in heel or wedge. Wedge oxfords are my favorite

Flirty Maryjanes. Update your closet. Softly pointed toes and a nod to the 40s are all around us. Engage your desire to play dress-ups.

Army influenced desert boots. A tip: wear them with short, tights and thin scrunch-able socks to show off the boot as a main accessory...a perfect way to transition from summer wardrobe to fall.

What to Know Before the Show

Lately, my clients have been interested in going to Fashion events in Rochester and the biggest question seems to be, "What is it like?" This usually means is, "What should I expect? Can anybody go? Will I feel out of place? What should I wear?"

The thing that separates the International Fashion Week that takes place in NYC, Londan, Milan and Paris from Rochester fashion events is being "fashion forward" as a opposed to fashion of the now. Our local events revolve around retailers showing off their current seasonal stock. During International Fashion Week, designers are previewing their collections a year in advance for retailers (buyers) to purchase. This means that the Fall Collections shown in Milan will be the styles that we begin to purchase and see in Rochester Boutiques in Fall 2012.

As tomorrow night is the kickoff to Fashion Week of Rochester with a Boutique Crawl, I am here to answer your questions.

What should I expect?

Lots of people, a lot of ladies traveling from boutique to boutique dressed sharply but not too fancy to be getting in and out of the car. Boutiques will have their best foot forward with a spread of wine and some cheese or fruit. Most likely, there will be local models milling about the store wearing the merchandise.

At fashion shows, expect people to look sassy, be drinking a decent amount and be viewing upcoming displays of the vendor's merchandise for the season.Often there is a mini-performance during intermission.

Can Anybody go? Will I Feel Out of Place?

Anybody can go to the boutique crawl. Anybody can go to fashion shows, typically, although tickets should be purchased in advance. Feeling out of place is all about YOUR attitude. Go in a sassy outfit with a pep in your step and you will blend right in.

What should I wear?

This is an excuse to look fabulous with no holds barred. Go for it. Dress up as much as you want. I suggest starting the outfit out right with some spectacular shoes and building your look from there. Just keep in mind that Rochester weather can be finicky! Bring an umbrella.

WARNING: Do not go in Jeans, a t-shirt and sneakers. You will look frumptastic and be casually dismissed immediately. I hate to sound superficial, but c'mon. It's a fashion event. Take some pride in yourself!

On the Town: Two Events

Each Fall Rochester has it's own twist on Fashion Week with two events worth penciling into your calendar.

Dado's Fall Fashion Show

Dado's Fall/Winter fashion show is TOMORROW and Tuesday night at Good Luck restaurant at 8pm. Formerly a one night affair, this shows increasing interest and attendance. While the retail clothing is the star of the show, other highlights include Jewelry by Mann's Jeweler's and a guest performance by Rochester City Ballet. Proceeds benefit the Wilmot Cancer Center. Tickets available at Dado Boutique...currently standing room only tickets available.

A three day event called "Fashion Week" in honor of the International Fashion week happening each September. Rochester's version consists of a Thursday night boutique crawl and three fashion shows. It boasts collaboration among local boutiques, retailers, salons, and accessory designers. Note: must buy tickets in advance for the fashion shows. This year's events take place October 14th, 15th, and 16th. Ticket locations below.

How Skinny Should My Tie Be?

Rule of thumb, gentlemen: your tie should be an appropriate width-to-body-mass ratio.

With the trend towards skinnier and skinnier ties, we make a nod to all things MadMen and every other 60s based tv show hitting the channels this fall (Pan Am, The Play Boy Club). But, seriously fellas, take a good look in the mirror and make an informed decision. "Does this make me look like I am wearing  a piece of fruit-by-the-foot?" A slender man with a slender tie= dashing. A big dude with a skinny tie has created a disproportionate suggestion that he is even larger.

Need a guide? Keep the width no wider than a roll of extra wide duct tape and no skinnier than the width of your two index fingers. And this my own personal suggestion- a tie should never be skinnier than one's belt.

The retro-inspired skinny tie image is not complete unless paired with NONpleated dress pants and/or a sleek, fitted suit.

Cheerio, my dapper men. Cheerio.

MORE Closet Cleansing! Keeping the Basics

Half the battle of cleaning and clearing the closet is knowing WHAT to keep.  Check out these basic checklists to see if your wardrobe is passing or failing.

A woman's closet should have:

  • a versatile little, black dress and heels
  • a crisp white t-shirt to be worn with dark denim
  • both a pair of boot cut and a pair of straight/skinny jeans
  • a sassy black pencil skirt hitting slightly above to slightly below the knee
  • black dress pants that make your ass look amazing
  • 2-5 button down dress shirts in classic colors and weaves (ex pin stripe)
  • plenty of liner tanks
  • various cardigans in neutral colors
  • a pair of adorable red shoes
  • ballet flats (neutral colors)
  • bras & intimates; underwear in both black and skin tone
  • a black, dressy wool coat for colder weather
  • a tailored, feminine trench coat

 A man's closet should have...

  • more ties than dress shirts
  • 5-10 button down collared shirts including white and classic blue
  • dress shoes in black, brown, and white for good measure
  • socks appropriate for dress shoes
  • a couple v-neck sweaters and zip/button up sweaters for layering
  • at least, one tailored suit
  • a few well-fitted classic white t-shirts
  • a few pairs of tailored denim
  • a pair casual sneakers that would be considered a hybrid between sneaker and dress shoe (Slip-ons are often the best).

In the Know: Cool Metal Jewelry

It is hard for me to tell you. I selfishly want to keep this amazing little secret to myself. But, today I gave myself a talkin' to and decided you all just need to know. Marissa of Interstellar Love Craft has the best deal on  handmade metal jewelry that you are going to find in Rochester.

I do not frequently find myself to be a repeat customer with jewelry but WOW. I am on my fifth piece already. Marissa's aesthetic is refreshing. She plays with metal in an both earthy  and geomtric styles. I have gotten compliments every time I wear my pieces. The prices are fair, even on the special order items. My last piece was a special order that she let me help design. She didn't up-charge for the request and didn't mind when I asked for an extension on the chain.

My next piece is going to be bringing her some of my favorite material (fool's gold/pyrite) and seeing what she want to do with it....can NOT wait.

You best get some pieces by this niche designer before the demand begins driving prices up.
Support a cool person who is creating a style for a very select crowd, here in Rochester.

Interstellar Love Craft . Marissa currently works in a studio at 250 Goodman St, #203. She has shown her jewelry at Java's Hearts & Crafts events and at the 2011 Clothesline Fest and will be at Artist Row Sunday, September 18th at the Rochester Public Market (10am-4pm).

Closet Cleansing 101

If Fall motivates anything in Western New York, it's a good shopping spree. Colors on the trees, feeling the breeze for the first time in months, and of course back-to-school-back-to-the-grind reminders that, alas, summer DIES for good when the seasons change around here. Play time is over. But not for your closet it isn't.

Some pointers for re-addressing the closet as you clean and clear it this fall:

If it's a classic and you have not worn it in a year, ditch it or replace.Classics- things like black dress pants, the little black dress, your husband's dress shoes.

If it's a trend item and you haven't worn it in 3 months, ditch it. Example - a blouse with nontraditional sleeves, a pair of pants with an extra long inseam, something in a color popular only this year.

If you have to ask yourself IF you look good, tell yourself to feel good, or wonder if it's too young for you, ditch it. Life is too short to suffer with image complexes. Wear what feels natural and makes your attributes look like attributes.

If you have 3 or more versions of the same item, ditch the excess. How many blue t-shirts do you need?Keep one plus another for backup.

If you love, love, love it so much that it's pilling, ripped, or faded, replace it asap!

Things to ditch this year:

Mommy Ass Jeans...that's right. Just because some 20-year-old can pull off a 1992 Kate Moss high waist, acid wash denim "retro" trend does NOT mean you can.

Uber Pointy Shoes or early 2000's Chunky Shoes. OUT.

KEEP it IF...

You wear it every week. (Your favorite high heels/dress shoes.)

It's lends itself to layering.(Cardigans, liner tanks or t-shirts...that shirt that never seems to get sweat-stained.)

You always feel good about your body when you wear it. KEEP.

It hangs well and rarely needs to be ironed.

1970s Flair

Spring 2011 runway had a distinctive lean towards the 1970's and WE LOVE IT!

Characterizing features:

  • waists that fall well above the natural waistline
  • waists that fall well below the natural waistline, to hip line
  • elegant hems JUST grazing the floor line
  • long flowing hair with head band and head wrap detail
  • colors- cobalt blue, almost burnt orange, deep mulberry, beige sand tones

Rochester: Fashion Flash

Dear readers,

First off, my apologies for falling off the face of the earth this summer. I have been focusing energies on a fashion/beauty photographic project about to be wrapped up. (Images coming soon!) I am back and in business.

If it's any consolation, the fashion mood is JUST shifting now, as it always takes AMPLE time for Rochester to AMP up. But, never fear! Fashion is in the sweet smelling air of fall!

~andrea

Two major upcoming events will be defining style this season.

Fashion "Week" of Rochester

Rochester's first ever Fashion Week has been declared for Sept 30-Oct 2. More of a expose week-end, it boasts of a 3 day foray into what Rochester has to offer: a boutique crawl through 14 of the area's locally owned and operated destination stores; The Art of Fashion, a still modeled fashion show at Four Walls Art Gallery; and the weekend culminates with The Height of Fashion, a live runway show hosted by Rochester's own Memorial Art Gallery. This sounds built for success.

One criticism: scheduling for this event was not clearly defined online or in print until a mere 3 weeks before the event. Even the local area stores selling tickets were not updated with details before/at the point when tickets arrived. For the sake if fashion aficionados awaiting in anticipation, get your info out there sooner!

Eye Candy hosts during Fashion Week's Boutique Crawl Thurs, Sept 30th.

Dado Fall Fashion Show

Dado kicks off it's third bi-annual fashion show October 19 at Good Luck, with a preview of fall/winter samples to salivate over. Don't fix what ain't broke seems to be the theme, as jewelry shown remains to be by Mann's and Futurpointe performs at intermission for the second time consecutively. New to the mix and will be hair (and makeup?) by Rock, Paper, Scissors Salon, an up-and-coming salon in the area salon circuit. One can't help but wonder why Scott Miller pulled out of Dado's fall/winter preview to do Fashion Week of Rochester...makes for a slight sense of competition. But, who are we kidding, here? Rochester's scene is just burgeoning such that the reality is beaucoup room for growth.

Ok, ladies and gents- get dapper, get set and GO!

Dado Fall Fashion Show- Tues, Oct 19th. The third bi-annual show slated to be a success.

Spring Style Notes

Spring is soon upon us and it is the ideal time to shop. New inventory is pouring in and if you like a steal, then cleverly mix up some winter clearance into your spring wardrobe.

andrea's spring must-haves

denim leggings

This is the new rage. Trendy and comfortable, you can't go wrong. Occasionally referred to as jeggings, jean leggings look best paired with tunic length shirts.

All of the prominent denim companies have a version of this trend; so, GO find your favorite pair!

(above, top: Joe's denim from shopbop.com, available in Rochester at A Step Apart; above, bottom: H&M leggings available at H&M retailers)

shirt dress/men's dress shirt

There's nothing sexier than getting out of bed and throwing on your boyfriend's rumpled button up. New takes on this style range from ultra feminine, body forming to loose and literal.

Which ever direction you steer, make sure your shirt is long enough to graze your cheekline (down below) and pair it with your new denim leggings!

andrea's pick:
Matt shirtdress by Jack by BBDakota, above,  keeps it structured and girly by hugging the natural waist. Available at Thread in Rochester.

jumper/romper/playsuit

Love your legs?? Show them off in a cutesy romper. Here's the key: WEAR with wedges/espadrilles to keep those sunkissed limbs looking toned.

Hate your legs?? Buy a full romper that draws attention to your arms. Problem solved.

The point is, buy a romper this Spring!!

andrea's picks:
Lucca Couture Jumper, above left, available at Urban Oufitters
Dolce Vita Romper, below right, with peekaboo lace back   available at shopbop.com (Dolce Vita sold at Dado of Rochester)

(above left, Floral Playsuit available at topshop.com)

hidden wedges

Hidden wedges are spectacular. They give the allusion of wearing a flat while still adding height and tone to the leg- perfect when wearing a romper. Best of all, they are comfortable to walk in. This may be fashion's best kept secret, as they are not easy to find.

andrea's pick:
Molly Classic by 80%20, above, available online at Amazon.com

(Note: any hidden wedges by 80%20 are amazing, although it is difficult to find retailers in this area. I use http://www.8020nyc.com/ to find styles first, and then the site will direct you to online retailers where you can purchase.)

How to Wear a Scarf

The great thing about Rochester is "weather" it's summer, winter, spring or fall, you can always rock a scarf. As it happens, I have a particularly long neck and I wear them almost daily in the winter. Lately, my clients keep asking me how to wear a scarf. I took these inquiries as encouragement for my next assignment.

May I suggest two main pointers?
1. Chose a fabric that is unique, looks great and hangs nicely.
2. Scarves look better on a blank canvas- wear them with solid colors and simple necklines.

Scarves allow YOU to be creative, but here are some ideas for inspiration.

Trendy Summer Scarf
I like the shape of a square piece of material worn as a scarf.  The method here is a cowboy-esque, bandana wrap but using a woven scarf. I suggest you put your own spin on it and STOP with all the fringe....it's been overkill since last summer.

Try this similar look instead:

The Gauzy Scarf
Scarves made of lightweight gauzy material look beautiful and can be worn casually wrapped and draping. I prefer to buy them on the wider side, as they can double for a lightweight shawl. For a trendy take, look for unique prints, weaves, or hand dipped dyes. There are so many gorgeous designs out there. When in doubt, a solid-colored, gauzy, cotton fabric still takes dyes with beautiful variation...you just can't go wrong.

This scarf has been wrapped continuously around the neck, end tucked in.

Modern takes on prints and dyes create a melted look when draped around the neck.

The Eternity Scarf/Circle Scarf

This is my favorite new trend! The eternity scarf is merely a large loop of fabric that can be wrapped multiple times around the neck. I prefer these scarves in lightweight gauges or jersey knit (soft, t-shirt material). So comfy! The trick: it's hard to wear these with collared jackets. Most people wear over or under the collar. I like to get creative with all my oversize collars and wrap them "together forever". (Ok, that was corny.)

Classic Looks
Of course, we must not discourage the tried and true minimalist ways of wrapping a scarf, depicted below.

Now, go buy some scarves!

Shop Smarter: Secret No.1

Know quality. If you educate yourself and have a good idea of what you are looking for, you won't end up disappointed AND your purchases will last longer. Remember, quality over quantity.

(With that said, I should tell you that I am the person who buys the expensive toilet paper. Yes, that's right. why pay less for a painful experience down there, when chincy toilet paper only means using MORE squares per application. Think about it- a person uses LESS sheets per use when the quality is STRONGER and softer. I think how people view toilet paper says a lot about their shopping personalities. LOL. It's true, my friends!...but let's talk clothing.)

Here are some quality markers:

Styling
Fit
Fabrication/Durability
Price
Consistency

This list is similar to our Perfect T-SHIRT list from last week, but here's the thing: the order of importance is up to you. Styling/Fit always comes first in my mind.

Styling is what makes the item jump off the rack. How does it hang? What makes the lapel unique compared to other jackets. Is it a run of the mill sweatshirt or a motorcycle inspired sweatshirt? Does the sleeve have tucks and gathers or is it capped? Style gives the outfit a flavor. OVER stylized outfits can tend to look corny or like a costume.

Fit is how the item conforms to your body. Every company in the USA uses a FIT MODEL, someone who's body type are the proportions that they make their clothes to. Larger sizes are just a ratio of the initial fit model. Think about how a DELIA's outfit would fit \very differently from a J.JILL outfit. One uses an early adolescent female fit model, the other uses the matured, perhaps even menopausal, female figure. In the USA, there are no laws or regulation about SIZING standards, thus each company makes their own. This leads to what is known as VANITY SIZING, common among companies targeting a youthful shopaholic. Vanity sizing sizes clothing with numbers smaller than the actual size, in order to flatter the size 6 customer who leaves with a size 4 pair of pants feeling pretty darn good about herself. Bottom line: know how clothes fit your body properly and avoid squeezing into things because of the size it says on the tag. (We will discuss this more in posts to come.)

Fabrication is what composes the fabric of the item. Fabrication is legally required on each garment sold in the USA and is listed like food ingredients, in order or largest amount to smallest of fiber content.

Some fabrics are cheaper than others. Some are more expensive. Companies cut corners by blending cheaper fibers into more expensive fibers. Some materials react differently in the wash than others. Some expensive materials are more costly and/or rare, but less durable. Sometimes, certain fibers are sourced from more expensive countries, ultimately driving UP the cost of that item. Certain fabrics is appropriate for one type of item but not another. Think about it- I definitely would pay a lot of money for a great wool coat, but I'd really rather not buy wool blend dress pants in the spring because they wont last for the summer months. Sometimes items end up on the sale rack merely because the fabric chosen wasn't appropriate for the seasonal shopper. (This can be a great opportunity to purchase on sale and save for later.)
Side note: before manmade fibers were created, people swam in WOOL bathing suits. Can you just imagine selling a wool bathing suit in the store nowadays? HA!

Price is often an indicator of better quality. Expensive fibers cost more. Higher quality control takes more time/costs more money. Faster production (to put out the trends FIRST ) costs more, if a company does not want quality to suffer. Fashion production has a holy trinity- cost, quality and speed. When producing a garment, only two can ever be achieved. Do the math: if you want a QUALITY garment produced FAST, the price skyrockets. If you want a QUALITY garment produced at a good COST, the speed slows down.

Consistency is a mark of good business. Whether the target customer is a wealthy socialite or a bargain hunting suburbanite, peoplel return for service when they know what to expect. Consistent style, fit, fabrication, price, or maybe customer service. We all have favorite haunts- clothing stores, restaurants, hair salons. Why do you keep going back? Some thing there is always consistent.

The Essential T-Shirt

Every season I find few of those amazing essential pieces and this week, I found winter's perfect T-shirt as Target in the maternity section of all places! No, it won't make you look pregnant. In fact the only thing maternity looking whatsoever about this T is that is is super long- perfect for layering under countless outfits this winter! I bought in in every color on the rack.

Criteria for the perfect T-Shirt:

1. First glance. Check!
How great does it look on that hanger? This Liz Lange T is a burnout material that is both stylish, but not soo burnt out that it will only last 5 washes. It comes in bright white, soft grey and deep pink ( pink threads woven with subtle black threads- very nice.)

2. Fit.  Check!
A good t-shirt need to fit longer rather than wider. This particulaer T is extra long, falling midway down the bottom when fully stretched. The armholes need to be cut high enough to make an attractice cling across the bustline. V-neck or crew depends on your body type and preference. For example, I have narrow shoulders, making V-neck an ideal choice to visually enhance them.

3. Feel. Check!
The fabrication of a great always includes a goood blend of cottonm, preferably 60% or more. I prefer my T's preshrunk, but in this case, cost wins that argument. Such a deal.

4. Price. Check!
Only $12.99 online and currently reduced to HALF-PRICE in target stores NOW.

Check out this Perfect Layerable T-shirt at here !!

The Heaven's Shine Down: New East Ave Boutique Opens

I get so excited when I see something fresh happen for Rochester fashion! Savvy shoppers out there NEED to check out EYE CANDY on East Ave ( http://www.eye-candyclothing.com/ ).

Opened by graphic designer Nadine Hall of Penfield, Eye Candy has bold, simplistic atmosphere. The walls are bright and colorful, allowing the clothing to take centerstage against them. The music was quirky in that indypop way that make you want to nod your head to the beat while you shop. I must also add, when I went in the heat was ON and I heartily appreciate the warmth when I'm standing in the dressing room in my underwear!

Best of all, Nadine was attentive without imposing that irky obligation that you MUST buy what you opt to try on. Therefore, I purchased!! Yes and I wholeheartedly plan to spend a nice chunk of my next paycheck on the Recession denim that I tried on but could not afford this week.

Oh, you know we are all checking the pricetags, holding our breath, at places like this. FEAR NOT for the little black dress for under $100 is with you. Clothing options included a sundry of pieces for under $100 and a few just over. Men's clothes, naturally ran a little higher, but the basic tops for men and woman alike were $40-$50. The men's section was fitted with some decent outerwear; the woman's was not. (I did find this peculiar. And you know I love my jackets.) Instead, the woman's had a feisty show of holiday dresses and pieces that can be mixed and matched. Is this tactic a sign of inexperienced buying or a smartly targeting the demographic? I'm prone to think the former, but time shall tell. Time shall tell.

Start with Structure

Whether its building a house, a haircut or an outfit, STRUCTURE is the first step. With clinging jersey knits continuing to gain popularity, this art principle continues ring true.

Here are some suggestions sure to structure the body better in your latest trendy outfit:

1. Express Lined Camisoles

Love handles- you just cannot have them. Express lined camisoles are long lasting and have superb spandex, making anyone's flab a bit firmer. And, they can easily be tucked in and keep you insulated in the winter.

2. Control Top Pantyhose

When an ensemble does not work with the camisole, shear control top pantyhose do the trick, even under dress pants and jeans. Hanes makes a great version that make you forget you even put them on, Hanes Barely There. These target both the love handles and a less than perfect behind.

3. Leggings

Tunics. T-shirt dresses. Legging Jeans. Legging Dress Pants. Capri Length. Calf-length. Full length. Everywhere we turn there are legging. A good rule of thumb: if born before 1970 and/or weigh more than 150, leggings are not for you. Middle aged women tend to look stuck in a past decade and ladies beyond a thin frame tend to look unkempt donning this popular trend.

Leggings are comfortable, casual or dressy and relatively inexpensive to replace. But in this case, do yourself a favor: ONLY purchase leggings of quality material that is not transparent. IF purchasing legging  jeans , be aware that only a unisex long, lean body type ever looks spectacular in them. When it comes to legging dress pants, a little spandex goes a long way. Finally, these pants are NEVER to be worn with natural waist shirts (think fingertips and longer). For some dresses, consider replacing leggings with solid black tights.

I have a love/hate feeling about leggings. They've been so good to me, but they can never be a part of a professional office wardrobe. And, as the babydoll shape fades out of popularity, it's to be expected that leggings will finally be replaced by fabulous tights. On the other hand, the eighties trend continues to carry on the skinny pants/legging styling. So, stay on the lookout for more professional versions and be prepared to spend a little extra to get a cut and quality that make your body look its best.

Spring 2010 Sees Bold Bursts of Orange

The Spring 2010 runway has already revealed that orange, borderline-lipstick-red is a common color being used by designers. This trend lends itself, although is not limited to, the tribal theme emerging among the New York designers.
